ChatGPT Experiences Another Drop in Traffic 🚦

OpenAI's ChatGPT, the immensely popular artificial intelligence chatbot introduced in November, experienced its third consecutive monthly decline in website visits in August. However, there are indications that this decline may be stabilizing, as reported by analytics firm Similarweb.

Global desktop and mobile visits to the ChatGPT website decreased by 3.2% in August, reaching 1.43 billion, following approximately 10% drops in each of the previous two months. The average time spent by visitors on the website has also been gradually decreasing since March, with the average time on site dropping from 8.7 minutes to 7 minutes in August.

Despite these declines, there was a slight increase in worldwide unique visitors in August, rising from 180 million to 180.5 million users.

The return of students to school in September could potentially boost ChatGPT's traffic and usage, as some educational institutions have started to incorporate it into their programs. In August, ChatGPT traffic in the United States showed a slight increase, aligning with the reopening of American schools.

One contributing factor to this growth has been students seeking assistance with homework, with the percentage of younger users initially dropping over the summer and now showing signs of recovery.

ChatGPT initially triggered widespread use of generative AI in various daily tasks, from editing to coding, and reached 100 million monthly active users by January, just two months after its launch. Generative AI technology leverages past data to generate new content, such as writing essays or poems.

Before Meta's Threads launch, ChatGPT was the fastest-growing consumer application and is currently ranked among the top 30 websites globally.

Despite facing competition from several ChatGPT alternatives, including Google's Bard chatbot, launched this year, and Microsoft's Bing-powered chatbot, OpenAI remains a prominent player in the field. OpenAI also expanded its reach by launching the ChatGPT app for iOS in May, which may have impacted website traffic.

ChatGPT is available for free, with a premium subscription option priced at $20 per month. In addition to ChatGPT, OpenAI generates revenue by providing access to its AI models for developers and enterprises, both directly and through partnerships. Notably, Microsoft invested over $10 billion in OpenAI as part of their collaboration.
